Step-by-step breast self-examination

A simple guide to the monthly self-exam when and how, and what should prompt an immediate visit.

Step-by-step breast self-examination
A monthly breast self-exam is an important habit, best done a few days after your period ends when the breast is less tender. The goal isn't to self-diagnose tumors it's to know what your breasts normally look and feel like, so you'll notice when something changes. Stand in front of a mirror and examine the shape and texture visually, then lie down and use the fingers of the opposite hand in circular motions covering the entire area, all the way to the armpit. See your doctor promptly if you notice a new lump, a change in nipple shape, unusual discharge, or persistent localized pain. Regular ultrasound and mammogram (age-appropriate) screenings complement but never replace the self-exam.
