Healthy nutrition during pregnancy

What does your body actually need during pregnancy? A practical look at essentials for each trimester.

Healthy nutrition during pregnancy
Pregnancy doesn't mean eating for two it means eating for one and a half, with much higher quality. Your body only needs about 300 extra calories per day in the second and third trimesters; what matters far more is what those calories contain: clean proteins, colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and good sources of calcium and iron. Folic acid, iron, and vitamin D supplements are commonly prescribed during pregnancy, especially in the first months. Avoid raw meat, fish high in mercury, and unpasteurized cheese. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor about a personalized plan if you have gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or food sensitivities.
